We’re excited to share that Stahla Services was once again invited to speak with Eric Dye on the Enterprise Radio (EPN) podcast! Our Co-owner, Grant Stahla, returned for another engaging discussion, this time focusing on one of the largest and most capable units in our fleet: the 10-Stall Restroom Trailer.
It’s always a privilege to delve into how we provide top-tier comfort and robust sanitation solutions for large-scale events, demanding job sites, and critical emergency response situations nationwide. If you couldn’t catch the episode, we’ve got you covered with all the key insights Grant shared about this impressive “biggest, baddest” trailer.
What We Discussed: The High-Capacity 10-Stall Restroom Trailer
Grant didn’t hold back his enthusiasm for this unit: “Excited to talk about the 10 station restroom trailer? It’s one of the biggest, baddest restroom trailers that’s out there.” He emphasized that this trailer is the solution “when you have the most capacity or need the most capacity and have a good amount of people at your event or at your job site… when you have not just hundreds of people, but thousands of people.”
Serving Large Crowds & Critical Needs: Capacity & Use Cases
Understanding when the 10-stall is the optimal choice is crucial:
- Large-Scale Events: When you need to ensure comfort for a significant number of attendees.
- Guest Capacity: Grant outlined the standard: “For an event, you’re gonna want that 10 station. It can support one stall per 75 guests… you’re looking at about 750 guests that it can support based on a four hour event with no alcohol.” (Note: This can be adjusted for events with alcohol, similar to other trailers).
- Very Large Events: “If you end up having a couple thousand people, you might need three of these trailers or one of these for your VIP area and then supplement the rest of them with plastic porta potties.”
- Demanding Commercial Sites & Facility Support: For substantial workforces or when primary facilities are down.
- Worker Support: “With long term jobs, you’re looking at one stall per 15 workers. So you bring one of these trailers in. Maybe you have an office facility with 150 workers, then you’d be able to bring in 1 ten station restroom trailer and support your entire office space.” This is invaluable during bathroom remodels or water main issues.
- Flexibility in Fleet: “If you have more people, you can always add more trailers, potentially a 10 station plus a four station, or if you have less people, maybe you’re looking at an 8 station restroom trailer.”
A Memorable Story: 10-Stall Trailers in Disaster Relief
When asked for a real-world example, Grant immediately highlighted their critical role:
- Disaster Relief Operations: “The 10 station restroom trailers, I think of disaster relief. When there’s hurricanes or floods when you need to be able to support a lot of people at one time, we send 10 station restroom trailers.”
- These units, at 25 feet long, boast a 25% larger waste tank than their 8-stall counterparts.
- They are essential for “man camps” supporting entities like the National Guard or Samaritan’s Purse, often alongside other mobile facilities such as shower trailers and mobile kitchens.
- “For the restrooms, you’re gonna want the biggest trailer available. So this 10 station really shines in that environment.”
Understanding the Investment: 10-Stall Rental and Purchase Costs
Transparency is key. Grant provided a detailed breakdown:
- Purchasing New: Approximately $110,000, depending on specifications.
- Commercial Rentals (per 28 days/month unless noted):
- Weekly: ~$7,000.
- 28 Days: $10,000 (rough average market cost).
- 2-5 Months: $8,700 per 28 days.
- 6+ Months: $7,400 per 28 days.
- 18+ Months (Year and a half or more): ~$6,200 per 28 days.
- Potential Add-On Costs:
- Waste Tank Pump Outs: $350 – $500 per service.
- Transportation: ~$4.00 – $5.00 per loaded mile.
- Additional Cleaning/Restocking: ~$250 – $350 per service.
- Generator Rental: ~$300 – $400 (weekend event); $1500 – $2500 (monthly, excluding fuel).
- Fresh Water Tank Fill: ~$250 – $300 per fill.
The Rent vs. Buy Decision for a 10-Stall Trailer
The “rent vs. buy” consideration is significant for such a substantial asset. Grant noted, “That roughly equates to about a year and a half to two years of rental.”
His advice? “The decision to purchase versus rent really just depends on how long you need it and if you’re an asset management company and if you want to manage your own assets versus if you want more of an asset light model and wanna have the experts manage it, that’s when you do rental.” For most, renting from Stahla Services offers the advantage of expert management, maintenance, and logistical handling.
Deep Dive: Design & Specifications of Our 10-Stall Restroom Trailer
Grant painted a picture of this large-scale unit:
- Layout: “As the name implies, there’s 10 stalls.” The trailer features two distinct rooms:
- Men’s Side: 3 urinals, 2 toilet stalls, and 2 sinks.
- Women’s Side: 5 toilet stalls and 2 sinks.
- Stalls: Individual, offering enhanced privacy, typically reaching from the floor to near the ceiling with a small gap for airflow.
- Dimensions:
- Box Length: Approximately 25 feet.
- Length with Tongue: Approximately 29 feet.
- Width (Box Only): 8.5 feet.
- Width (Steps Down): Approximately 12 feet.
- Height (Box Only): Approximately 11 feet.
- Height (with A/C): Approximately 12 feet.
- Tanks:
- Fresh Water: 200 gallons.
- Wastewater: Approximately 950 gallons.
- Weight:
- Empty: Approximately 10,000 lbs.
- GVWR: 14,000 lbs (two 7,000 lb torsion axles), often derated to just under 10,000 lbs for non-CDL towing.
- Interior Finish: Typically an “event grade white and gray finish,” which is aesthetically pleasing and durable enough for commercial applications.
- HVAC: “Always gonna be two A/C units on these ten stations because they’re a bigger trailer.”
- Lighting: Bright and efficient 12V LED lighting for both interior (10-15 lights in each stall area) and exterior (step lighting, floodlights for safety).
The Technicals: Water, Power, and Transportation Essentials
Understanding the operational needs is vital for smooth deployment:
- Plumbing: Features a mechanical room (typically on the driver’s side) where all electrical and plumbing converge. Includes two 12V water pumps for the 200-gallon freshwater tank, enabling use in locations without direct water access.
- Electrical:
- A 12V system powers the water pumps and lights, managed by a converter.
- Requires standard 110 Volt, 15 AMP connections.
- Summer: Needs two connections to power the two A/C units and the 12V system.
- Winter: Requires about four connections to run electric wall heaters and toe-kick heaters, ensuring warmth and preventing freezing.
- Transportation & Setup:
- Weight: Around 10,000 lbs empty. “Ideally a 1 ton pickup” is recommended for towing.
- Hitch: Uses a 2 5/16th inch ball.
- Connections: Standard safety chains, 7-way plug for trailer brakes and lights, and a trailer breakaway connection.
- Setup: Typically takes 20-30 minutes. Steps for the men’s and women’s entrances are designed for easy deployment. Leveling the trailer and connecting utilities complete the process.
- Manufacturers: Built by reputable names in the industry like Jag, Satellite, Lang Trailers, Ultra Lav, Black Tie, and Ameri-can Engineering, ensuring quality construction.
One Key Takeaway for the 10-Stall
When asked for the single most important thing to remember, Grant summarized: “10 station restroom trailers are there for when you have 1000 or multiple thousands of people. It’s one of those trailers that you get when you have a lot of people there and you need to be able to support them with air conditioning and heat and running water and soap.”
